Exploring the Nature and Culture of Sa Pa, Vietnam

To see more photos and videos from Sa Pa, explore the Sa Pa location page.

With its abundant nature and distinctive rice terraces, the Vietnamese town of Sa Pa brings in many tourists and Instagrammers—as well as rapid economic changes. Located 1500 meters (4921 feet) above sea level, Sa Pa is the capital town of Sa Pa District in Lào Cai Province, a region in northwest Vietnam that lies in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range in the far eastern part of the Himalayas and runs along the Chinese border. The mountains in this area are covered with rows of rice fields lined up like staircases, creating an extraordinary landscape.

Sa Pa is home to several local hill tribes of which the Hmong and Dao are the largest. Although the tribes inhabited the region for centuries, it wasn’t until the French colonization in the late 1880s that Sa Pa became recognized as an official town on the national map. Since then, different groups of people have moved in and out of the area due to military conflicts and economic reformations to create the current state of cultural diversity. Today, the rustic living environment creates a large draw for people who want to share in the experience of the frontier town at its full economic boom.

Beautiful!

A Peek into the Life of a Tibetan Monk with @gdax

For a peek into the daily life of Tibetan monk དགེ་འདུན་དབང་ཕྱུག (Gedun Wangchuk), follow @gdax on Instagram.

དགེ་འདུན་དབང་ཕྱུག, or Gedun Wangchuk, (@gdax) is a Buddhist monk living in Tibet, where he uses Instagram to share scenes from his daily life atop one of the highest locations on earth. The region boasts an average elevation of 4,900 meters (16,000 feet) and is home to some of the world’s tallest mountains, including Mount Everest at the Nepal border to the southwest.

"Mankind shares and lives on planet Earth as one family with each continent having its own different nationalities, religions, faith, customs, unique culture and languages. But aside from such differences, we all have the same common desire for happiness," Gedun says. "That’s why Instagram, as a window to this global family, is a joy."

So beautiful!

Meet the movers and shakers of the pollination biz

Pollination is vital to life on earth, but most pollinators are so nimble and quick that we never quite see them in action. In his visually stunning TED Talk, filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg shows us a close-up view of the intricate world of pollen and pollinators.

Join us in geeking out over this trailer for TEDxHeraklion — an event held in an aquarium(!!) in Crete.

It has all the things: fish, coral, a very serious man sitting at a desk in front of fish and coral prepping invitations to the event with a real wax envelope seal.

It is paired with a soundtrack created by event team members, featuring only traditional Cretan instruments. A+. Good one, TEDxHeraklion.
